Editorial: Presidential Addresses
Did President Obama err recently while reading from his teleprompter?
In a recent teleprompter reading President Obama gave we citizens some advice which I will paraphrase as follows, “Turn off your TV. Stop watching all that cable TV. Don't be about politics all the time. Go talk to your neighbors.” Might he just as easily have said, “Get your news from me; I’ll tell you what is important; I’ll tell you what I want you to know?” With all due respect to the president, I will determine what is important to me in my household. I will determine when the TV is on and what station it is tuned to in my home. Thank you Mr. President for your sage advice but no thank you. I do not trust you and I will keep track of what you are doing by listening to sources I do trust.
In another teleprompter reading President Obama goofed in the simple pronunciation of the word ‘corpsman’. This demonstrated three things to me. Most important was his unfamiliarity with the military and the jobs of our soldiers and marines. Another was that he apparently never practices these teleprompter deliveries in front of anyone who would have knowledge of the contents and finally, number three, the president has a remarkable talent in that he is able to so smoothly deliver a speech that is written before him while seeing it for the first time. My normal nature would be to simply ignore his lack of familiarity with a word he might mispronounce not once but three times were it not for two things. 1) Much of the media did not seem to think it was a big deal and 2) when Dan Quayle misspelled the word ‘potato’ the media did chastise him and they made it a big deal. President Obama, you may have the mainstream media on your side but in many instances this only draws attention to their lack of consistency and to your errors. This draws my attention to the first three demonstrated points I made before and causes me to ask these questions: Why is he or those who help him practice his speeches so unfamiliar with the roles in the military that he would mispronounce corpsman as 'corpse man' and/or who is it that is writing his speeches? Are his speeches controlled? If so, by who? Is he seeing and reading these words for the first time when he makes these speeches and if so, is he being controlled by someone who has made a science out of political persuasion that would only work if as stated earlier, we got our news only from the alphabet networks or our neighbors? This concerns me greatly, more than the mispronunciation itself. If Obama is an incarnation of William Hurt’s character in the movie Broadcast News then I want to know, I think we all should know who it is that is performing the work of Albert Brooks and placing those words on that teleprompter. Is our president being controlled by nefarious people intent on destroying this country as we know it?
