Is Obamacare On The Ropes?
Obamacare has not yet been dealt a real death blow but a huge blow was delivered by the citizens of Missouri on Tuesday when they voted overwhelmingly to declare that Missouri would opt out of the federal healthcare plan. It remains to be seen whether this vote is simply symbolic or whether the wishes of the citizens of a state can override federal law but when 71% of the voters say yes to an initiative that rejects Obamacare the vote must be considered significant. Many apparently showed up at the primary polls to vote only for that referendum. Many ballots had only registered a vote for the initiative with no votes cast in either Democrat or Republican primaries.
National polls indicate a rejection of the Obama agenda by 56% to 46%. This represents a 20 point drop for the Obama Administration and is good news to those of us who regard our republic as worth preserving.
Obama has been in office now a very long 19 months. For Tea Party Patriots the election of 2012 cannot come fast enough. The question will be how to limit the damage this administration can do to our economy and our culture between now and then. The Missouri vote provides evidence of more than Missouri's position on Obamacare. It should be regarded as a barometer on the mood of this nation. It would be reasonable to expect similar results in the majority of the House Districts this fall as well as a majority of the Senate races. There is no reason why Republicans cannot take over both houses of Congress and assume control over legislation. However, Republicans must be aware that what is winning here isn't Republican versus Democrat, it is Conservative values over Liberal values and unless Republicans heed the clarion warning to return to the Constitutional limitations that are imposed on the federal government and take those limits seriously, unless Republicans stand against tyranny similar to what was imposed on us with Obamacare, unless Republicans are willing to go to the mat for those Conservative principles, many Republicans can expect a similar fate in 2012. Tea Party conservatives have won primaries all across the country and will continue to win primaries over the standard Republican opponents because many Republicans who have been in the Senate and the House for many years have not served us well. These comments are directed toward those like Lindsey Graham who see the Senate as they want it to be rather than as it really is. During the Bush Administration the Democrats played hardball. They filibustered Presidential appointments for which they really have no Constitutional grounds. They avoided the Constitutional showdown by forming the Gang of 14 but now that a Democrat is making those appointments Senator Graham has returned to business as usual. It isn't that his position is improper. The problem is that we cannot return to business as usual until the Democrats are punished for the methods they used when a Republican was making nominations by turning the use of those methods on them. It should not be so. It is unconstitutional. It is regrettable. However, this is an instance in which they must use the same methods used against them to ensure the methods are never used again.
Senators like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe must recognize that adherence to the Constitution is not a radical position. Conservative equals traditional and how can traditional ever be considered radical? Scott Brown must be made to realize that the party that supported his election from all across the country is owed allegiance. No one expects blind faith, however it is time for these Senators to refuse to be the single Republican vote that provides cloture. There must be some loyalty toward those whose support was so freely provided them. This is richly deserved.
Republicans must raise their sights. Certainly they can declare victory if they assume majority position in either house but this is not enough, not with Obama still in the White House. Republicans must work to gain 2/3 of the seats in the House and a majority of seats in the Senate. 23 of the 33 seats that are vulnerable in 2012 are currently occupied by Democrats. If Republicans were to gain 2/3 of the House as a result of an angry American voter is there anyone who doesn't believe Republicans might not see Democrat defections sufficient in number to override an Obama veto in the Senate? If Republicans control the Senate with 51 votes, all they would need would be 16 Democrats to Repeal and Replace Healthcare over Obama's veto. Effective control can be had in the Senate without actual control.
