45,000 Mostly Gone
The majority of those 45,000 people that Weiner might have wanted to address were not in the audience on Monday when Anthony Weiner stepped forward to "accept full responsibility" for his actions to the guy at the back of the room. The actions he apologized for included aberrant behavior involving six young women and his betrayal of his family, his constituents, his party and his friends. It is difficult to understand what the consequences of this acceptance of responsibility will be. For now, all we know is that Anthony Weiner has not resigned.
There is one sure way to differentiate a Democrat from a Republican accused of unethical behavior in the Congress. Persons of both parties periodically demonstrate they are able to behave like lower forms of human beings but when confronted with their own inappropriate and embarrassing behavior is when the real distinction is seen. Republicans are shown the door by their own, Democrats refuse to resign. Have Democrats no shame?
Despite the many jokes that surrounded this adventure into sordid stories and innuendo, this is not a funny story. Congressman Weiner described his errors as a personal failing. One might also describe the Congressman from New York as a person drawn toward lies and perversions. Contrary to his unwillingness to accept responsibility last week and his incredible story that his Twitter account was "hacked," today Weiner gave a mea culpa and admitted that he had erred by sending what he thought was a direct message as a joke to a friend on Twitter when he suddenly realized he had posted the photo on Twitter for everyone to see. He admitted that he then made up the story about being hacked. Now he admits otherwise. Just as Clinton more than ten years ago was forced to admit inappropriate behavior with an intern after first denying it, Anthony Weiner followed a similar script and admitted to undistinguishing behavior. Is there solace in that at least Weiner had the good sense to not perjure himself before a Grand Jury?
Also maddening were the incriminations hurled toward Andrew Breitbart just prior to the news conference? Apparently some of the 45,000 had actually stayed, disguised as press and they seemed intent on defending one of their own. They would not pass up the opportunity to shoot the messenger. Breitbart had earlier been accused of actually being the hacker. Demonstrating the courage of self defense, Breitbart charged the press with their own failure to treat this as a legitimate news story.
Democrats, Independents, Liberals, Moderates and Conservatives, as Americans do we not have the right to expect better behavior from our elected representatives than we might even expect of ourselves? These people enjoy positions of public trust. Such licentious behavior exposes representatives to blackmail on matters that effect public safety, national security and the treasury. Surely we have a right to expect better judgment from those who we send to Congress to address these matters.
Weiner needs to remove himself from the Congress as does any other member of the Congress that has similar skeletons in their closet. By refusing to resign today Weiner has demonstrated himself to be a narcissist who places his career above the body of which he is a member and the constituents he serves.
